Problem
- Ability to track the online logistics of each container in real time. All participants in the ecosystem will have access to information and can share it freely.
- Risks for container transportation will be less: the State Customs Service will be able to analyze information about the transportation of goods from the moment of the relevant order. This will increase the transparency, efficiency and security of container logistics.
- Low-risk goods will pass customs control in ports faster. Instead, the blockchain platform will "signal" cargo that will need to be scrutinized.
- Customs clearance of sea freight will become more transparent.
- Cut costs / time of service (case of Dubai)
Solution
Product / Market fit
Benefits
- Завдяки даним TradeLens Митниця вже відправила на ретельнішу перевірку контейнер — перевищення ваги на 700 кг.
Costs
- Probably no blockchain costs
- Big costs for users of the platform
- Support burden?
Costly complex customized enterprise blockchain projects managed by consortium are largely doomed and have been for a long time. They only succeed when all parties are on the same win-win page, and there is clear demonstrable ROI. ROI is hard to achieve when the bills are high.
The first generation of these projects simply cost too much money and many were too broad in scope. Large system integration and consulting firms were hired to help set up a consortium, install a private copy of a blockchain network, and implement custom complex applications that satisfied the needs of every participant in the consortium.
Feasibility
- A permissive context
- free from legal/technical barriers
Scaling
TradeLens announced the discontinuation of operations ending operations in the first quarter of 2023. The launch of the platform in 2016 was a joint initiative by A.P. Moller - Maersk, an integrated logistics company, and IBM
Unfortunately, while we successfully developed a viable platform, the need for full global industry collaboration has not been achieved. As a result, TradeLens has not reached the level of commercial viability necessary to continue work and meet the financial expectations as an independent business.
However, they have not managed to seduce two other key players: shippers and freight forwarders.
In the case of the shippers, Garrido says Maersk did not convince them of the added value of the platform to make an extra financial effort in exchange of the visibility as owners of the goods.
Involving freight forwarders was practically a losing battle from the start, as their doubts always existed. Garrido shares with PierNext that he spoke to several professionals and they expressed their doubts as to whether the shipping company's real interest was to disintermediate and reduce the value that freight forwarders bring to the logistics chain.
Garrido believes that, possibly, there has been a lack of incentives attractive enough to attract shippers and freight forwarders.
"One could be the cost, that certain document management would be sufficiently attractive economically speaking. Another incentive, access to information for the same or lower price than other competitors. The third incentive would be to encourage the freight forwarder to enter as a partner and to obtain a margin by getting their clients to join and share information," he proposes.
Javier Gallardo, director of Portic, the port community system (PCS) of Barcelona, shares a similar opinion. "Customers want traceability but they are not willing to pay such a high additional cost as TradeLens proposed. A flat fee or a lower cost would make more sense," he says.
On the other hand, the benefit of the data provided beyond the shipping lines was small. "Their value proposition for information providers at terminals, PCS or freight forwarders was very low and did not generate value. Why should I provide my data to the TradeLens service if I don't get similar compensation?" asks Gallardo.
“Enhanced Blockchain as a Service” providers such as Kaleido, Settlemint, Shelterzoom, and Vendia typically sell simpler (narrower-scope) applications based on largely reusable code sets, application templates, and technologies that support easier legacy system integration. Price tags are commensurately coming down as well.
For example, Settlemint implemented supply chain projects with the Jharkhand state of India to track and trace seed distribution to almost 900 thousand farmers across the state, and with Europe’s AB InBev working with farmers to bring supply chain transparency to beer drinkers.
ShelterZoom successfully implemented tokenization and controls for the Vatican’s Pontifical Orientale Institute Library archived documents, allowing researchers worldwide access to documents online rather than have to travel to the Vatican in Rome. They are also tokenizing patient records for Argentina hospital Policlinico Model de Cipolletti which will allow patients to control their own records after the hospital establishes them.
Vendia worked with BMW to deploy a solution that tracks and reconciles defects in multiple parts of their supply chain, so that BMW can better assign costs associated with damages along the line. Vendia also worked with Atos to create a single immutable system of record across a complex chain of reinsurance participants.
